ANOMALIA X3M won the First Prize of the Imagen Viva Awards
Exhibited at Magma Futura. Montevideo, Uruguay
ANOMALIA X3M is an immersive xenopoetic audiovisual installation that explores the interaction between extreme geophysical phenomena and the evolution of life in speculative scenarios.
The piece is part of the Anomalía project by Tanky and C03RA, set within the context of the South Atlantic Magnetic Anomaly—an area where the weakening of Earth's magnetic field allows for greater exposure to cosmic radiation. ANOMALIA X3M shifts away from an anthropocentric perspective and speculates on how this vast and still poorly understood phenomenon could influence the emergence of new species and ecosystems.
Inspired by the most extreme ecosystems and the adaptability of extremophile organisms, we compiled and curated an extensive photographic archive of hostile landscapes and lifeforms that thrive in harsh conditions. Using this corpus, we trained generative Artificial Intelligence models to identify patterns of adaptation and imagine accelerated evolutionary processes and new organisms shaped by radiation-induced mutations. AI was used as a speculative and experimental laboratory to generate representations of novel lifeforms and alternative ecosystems in which they might flourish.
The piece’s sound design employs synthesis and electromagnetic frequencies translated into sonic landscapes.ficación de la obra emplea síntesis y frecuencias electromagnéticas traducidas en paisajes sonoros.
The work was awarded the First Prize in the Imagen Viva open call organized by Magma Futura and BMR, and will be on permanent display in the Magma Futura nave during April and May 2025.
In the words of juror Valentina Montero Peña:
“Digital images proliferate, capturing our gaze and our consciousness. Imaging technologies have become complex sociotechnical assemblages that have deeply shaped how we see the world and ourselves. Today, photography is no longer just that ‘mirror with a memory’ —as the daguerreotype was once called in the 19th century—; now, screens have turned into mirages that recreate our political, pornographic, terrifying, utopian, or apocalyptic fantasies.
Our relationship with technical images condenses a dimension where memories, bodies, fictions, and possible futures are negotiated. Their mutable and programmable nature transforms them into a field of forces where the political, aesthetic, and technological are intertwined, dazzling us.
The winning projects of Imagen Viva enter this critical arena, pushing the boundaries between the visible and the hidden. Anomalía X3M, by Leticia Almeida and Mathías Chumino (93 Studio), places us at the threshold of scientific speculation and biological fiction. By linking photographic archives with artificial intelligence, the piece questions the production of life beyond the human scale.”
